Crafting Knowledge: Hands-on Projects to Enhance Learning at Home

I was recently approached by blogger Michelle Hartman of www.Summercamper.net who wanted us to post an article on our site about parents who want to enrich their child’s learning beyond the standard classroom setting by supplementing it with more hands-on learning. She came to me at the right time: I was just starting the training a young intern who was studying industrial design, and was eagerly interested in supplementing his classroom education with his own hands on experience. Personally, I believe any discipline relies on more than what can be put into words, so things learned in school offer an incomplete picture of it’s component real world actions. I was reminded of this many times in the first few days of working with my intern as we finished the final assembly of a custom desk. These topics of “Learning by Doing”, and “Knowing in Action” were central topics in my Master’s thesis, and I think this would be good to revisit in a future blog post. This article encourages parents to promote hands-on learning for their children, and we are all for it!
